The Shaman Tonic

Germaphobes rejoice! There is a new method of defense for that guy who just coughed on you in the subway.

Inspired by the vinegar infused concoctions prescribed by Hippocrates, it was last Thanksgiving that I first tried to make a healing and prophylactic tonic for myself.  By the end of December, I was giving everyone little pint jars of tonic as presents.

In the Brooklyn Hippy household, we’ll typically take about a tablespoon of this tonic after feeling those first signs of sickness starting to come on (ie. itchy throat, headache, sensitivity/low energy).

Other times we’ll take a teaspoon/tablespoon preventively following a long car ride, air travel, or a sketchy commute home with that coughing guy I told you about earlier who still hasn’t learned how to “cough like a vampire”.

If we missed the tonic window and are already sick, we’ll take one tablespoon after breakfast, another before bed and make sure we drink at least 3 liters of water throughout the day.  This will usually reduce the duration of an illness dramatically by giving the immune system an organic booster-shot.

This incredible variety of healing ingredients combines to produce a potent and natural antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, expectorant, immune system boosting health tonic.  (Catches Breath…)  It can even be taken daily as a supplement to a healthy diet.

The Shaman Tonic can last over a month, and when the liquid has finally been finished you can either blend the remainders and continue taking as usual or use them in your cooking.

This tonic can also be pretty picante depending on the type of peppers you use, so take that into consideration before giving it to children or people who are sensitive to spicy foods.

The Recipe

2 red onion
Add Chopped Red Onion
3 garlic
Add Chopped Garlic
4 ginger turmeric
Add Peeled And Chopped Ginger & Turmeric
5 chilis
Add Chopped Hot Peppers
6 lemon
Add The Juice Of Two Lemons
7 acv
Fill The Jar With Apple Cider Vinegar Leaving 1/2″ Of Space At The Top
8 spices
Add The Oregano & Fresh Pepper

11 shaken
Shake The Mixture And Let It Pickle For A Few Days

32oz mason jar
1 med-large red onion
10 cloves of garlic
2 inches of ginger
2 inches turmeric root
2-3 hot peppers
2 lemons
Apple cider vinegar
2 tsp oregano
2 tsp freshly ground pepper

1. Roughly chop all the ingredients and place inside of your mason jar with the oregano and ground pepper
2. Add the juice of 2 lemons
3. Fill the rest of the jar with apple cider vinegar leaving ½” of space at the top.
4. Shake the jar and leave it in a cool dry place for about 3 days.
5. Move to your refrigerator and enjoy, being sure to shake before each use.
