Vitamin D3: Eating Sunshine

There is only one item on my desk that has the power to revitalize me, make me younger, and boost my immune system.  It could be called sunshine in a bottle but is most commonly referred to as Vitamin D3.  During this past winter, I took one tiny capsule every day with breakfast and didn’t get more than a minor sniffle.  This is really saying something because I’m usually good for a sore throat or fever at least once in the colder months.  It also helped that I took the Shaman Tonic whenever I felt any signs of oncoming illness.  Check out the article on how to make it yourself Here.

One might wonder why something so beneficial for health isn’t taken by every human on earth. But after reading this I’m positive you’ll be on the D train…  that sounded wrong.

What is Vitamin D3

Although its given moniker is vitamin D3, it acts more like a hormone than a vitamin. Whether you’re getting vitamin D from food like fish or eggs, supplements, or daylight, your body converts it into a steroid hormone, called calcitriol.   Controlling the expression of over 1000 genes, or nearly 1/24 of the human genome, D3 has some pretty remarkable benefits.

Keeps You Healthy

According to a 2010 study done at Jikei University School of Medicine in Japan, supplementing with D3 may reduce the incidence of flu during the winter.

D3 can reduce your risk for multiple sclerosis, a 2006 study documented.

A few studies have also noted that D3 helps in decreasing your risk for cardiovascular disease including hypertension, and left ventricular hypertrophy.

Makes You Happier

Research has shown that vitamin D might play a valuable role in warding off depression and regulating mood. In one study, scientists found that people suffering from depression benefitted from taking a vitamin D supplement, reducing their symptoms.

In a peripheral finding, another study of people with fibromyalgia, UK researchers found vitamin D deficiency was found more often in those who were also experiencing anxiety and depression.

Keeps You Younger

Evidenced in other studies, mice which are unable to respond to vitamin D exhibited dramatic signs of aging in all the organs on a cellular level.

The perfect example of the link between D and youth appears when looking at telomere length, the caps at the end of chromosomes that help maintain chromosomal integrity.  According to Dr.Rhonda Patrick, a vitamin D expert, “ In one study involving 2,100 female twins, those with the lowest vitamin D levels had shorter telomeres that corresponded to five years of aging.”

Downsides of not getting enough

Another way to show how vital D3 is to our bodies is by listing all the problems associated with vitamin D deficiency.  It is thought that nearly 70% of people are deficient to some degree.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with:
*Increased aging
*Immune dysfunction
*Increased cancer risk
*Learning impairments
*Depression
*Reduced brain seratonin/oxytocin
*Weaker bones
*Impulsive behavior
*Accelerated telomere shortening (a biomarker attributed to biological aging)

Using D3

Again quoting Dr. Patrick, “One study showed that people that were considered to be vitamin D deficient were able to raise their serum levels to sufficient levels after supplementing with 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day.”

Personally, I take 4,000IU every day and have seen notable differences in my life.  Not only did I experience a dramatic drop in winter blues, but I’ve been noticeably healthier since starting the regimen.
